Was ist Ihr Name?

I just read sth interesting about english name. It's quite interesting when I think of the nameS, can be English/Cantonese/Mandarin/German, people call me. I guess I have to use my toes to help me count the number of names.
A name is a code. I won't deny that some people (Some Chinese pathetically) put western values above their own culture. They have mistaken the code as the way to gain respect/admiration/reputation. The only way to gain respect/admiration/reputation is by your inner quality. A name? way too easy isn't it?
Then what is a name for?
A name can be a wish. Like mine, my parents hope that I can be full of wisdom (Luckily the blessing works and they aren't very disappointing!). Please don't feel offensive for those English readers, I think that English names don't carry a lot of meanings. Once I asked my gweilo/gweipor friends the meanings of their names, they told me stuff like 'I was named after my grandma'. Not as creative as, at least Chinese, I think.

English names actually do have meanings, English speaking people just usually don't know what they are. English is actually a product of German, French, Gaelic, Scandinavian and a little Latin, and our names come from all those sources, and others. But I personally prefer the Native American way of naming: Something about you, or what you've done. Geranimo = Yawns a Lot. Great name, I think.
